Children and young people in care

If you are a child or young person in the care of City of York Council, you can access advocacy support from Speak Up.

If you don’t currently live in York that's OK, we'll endeavour to support you wherever you are living and will speak with you to figure out the best way to do this.

Advocacy support could help you to:

  • have your voice heard within decision-making and planning, in line with your rights
  • be at the centre of your support from services
  • understand your rights and entitlements as a young person in care and make sure you have access to these
  • request information to help you understand why decisions have been made
  • challenge decisions or plans that you disagree with or are not happy with
  • prepare for review meetings if you would like to attend them; or an advocate can attend on your behalf if you don’t wish to attend
  • make a complaint if you are unhappy with services you have received
