To help identify the issues that are important to care experienced young people in York, the U Matter survey is offered every 2 years.
The U Matter survey is offered to all children and young people in care and care leavers between the ages of 11 and 25.
The survey helps Speak Up and Show Me That I Matter to identify issues that are important, and helps to identify key priorities that Show Me That I Matter will ask the Corporate Parenting Board to focus on.
Our current priorities are:
- developing a Care Leaver Hub – York Care Leaver’s Forum is currently working with senior managers to develop a care leaver’s hub in the city. Care leavers told us this should be in the city centre and should be a place where staff, support and information is accessible but that it should also be a place where care leavers can drop in and say hi or have a chat
- fostering – the Children in Care Council is working with fostering managers to help reshape the recruitment and training of foster carers and they are also working to improve the information children and young people receive when they move to a new foster carer by consulting on the fostering profiles
- protected characteristics – we'll be continuing to work with City of York Council to embed care experience as a protected characteristic into policy and practice
